The blanket in the background of this photo was created by strangers and gifted to us after the Canberra Firestorm in 2003. There is something special about hand made things and this one has certainly become a much loved treasure – replacing many that were lost.
Ten years later, my Mum and I found ourselves knitting squares to contribute to a similar project ‘Woolies for Tassie’ creating blankets for Tasmanian’s who had lost their homes in bushfires.
It was such a rewarding experience for us and we decided to keep knitting and start our own project ‘Blanket Them With Love’.
Since then we have received donations from already established knitting groups, nursing homes and people just learning to knit, of both completed blankets and squares. We have even received beautiful quilts and expanded the on-going project to include any hand-made blankets.
If you would like to like to be involved…either by knitting, donating yarn or contributing towards yarn and shipping costs to send blankets please feel free to contact us (or check project details below).
Our goal is to be able to provide blankets to those who have experienced sudden home loss so as to ‘Blanket Them With Love’.
We acknowledge the incredible contributions made by other blanket groups and projects (around the world) and are not trying to replace or replicate them.
This project has simply become a meaningful way for us (and others) to offer tangible support to other home loss survivors.
Bright Blessings,
ps – if someone you know has experienced home loss and you would like to nominate them for a blanket OR if you would like to register for one yourself, please email – info@suddenlyhomeless.com
